| A course for persons
experienced in climbing trees using a rope and harness (Work Positioning
System) and in the use of chainsaw from a rope and harness.
Successful completion of this course will prepare trainees for
assessment for NPTC Unit CS40.
The course is physical in nature. Trainees must have a good
level of general fitness and stamina. Medical conditions must
be reported to the course organiser prior to commencement. Certain
medical conditions may disqualify prospective trainees.
Trainees must hold NPTC Units CS30, either 31 or 37, 38 and
39 (minimum) and should preferably have attended basic felling
and tree climbing courses.
OBJECTIVES
The expected learning outcomes are that the trainee: -
1. Is aware of the legislation and safety guidelines pertaining
to tree climbing and use of chainsaw from a rope and harness.
2. Is aware of the safety considerations to be observed in organising
the work site.
3. Is aware of, and is able to apply: the procedures for pre-use
inspection of ladders and the safe use of ladders for entry into
tree, alternative access methods.
4. Is able to use appropriate techniques for movement within
the crown and to establish secure and comfortable work positions.
5. Understands the importance of, and is able to apply, correct
final pruning positions and the 1-2-3 method of branch removal.
6. Understands the types of pruning and when, why and how to
use each type. Has a good understanding of the theory of crown
thinning and reduction.
7. Is able to use hand tools and top-handled and rear-handled
chainsaws in a safe and efficient manner in order to carry out
crown thinning and crown reduction operations.
SYLLABUS
1. Legislation relating to aerial tree work. Status of AFAG Guides. Issue of
AFAG Guides 301, 308, 401, 402, 802, and 804.
2. Safety considerations to be observed in organising the work
site.
3. Pre-use inspection of ladders. Safe use of ladders for entry
into tree.
4. Use of adjustable strop(s), redirect(s), double rope system(s)
and fairlead pulley(s) to: effect safe movement within the crown
and to reach outer portions of crown; establish safe and comfortable
work positions.
5. Correct final pruning positions and the 1-2-3 method of branch
removal.
6. Types of pruning (formative, removal of specific branches,
removal of dead wood, removal of epicormics, crown cleaning,
raising, thinning and reduction) and when, why and how to use
each type - particularly concentrating on crown thinning and
reduction.
7. Use of hand tools and top-handled and rear-handled chainsaws
in a safe and efficient manner in order to carry out crown thinning
and crown reduction operations. Disposal of arisings.
