TRAINEES
An initial course for persons inexperienced in the use of Stump grinding machinery.

Successful completion of this course will prepare trainees for assessment for NPTC Unit ASG02.

The course is physical in nature. Trainees must have a good level of general fitness and stamina. Medical conditions must be reported to the course organiser prior to commencement. Some medical conditions may disqualify prospective trainees.

OBJECTIVES
The expected learning outcomes are that the trainee: -

1. Is aware of the legislation and safety guidelines pertaining to stump grinding machinery.

2. Recognizes the differences between tractor mounted (PTO driven) Stump grinders, and those with integral petrol/diesel engines.

3. Is aware of the PPE appropriate to stump grinder operation.

4. Is aware of the need for, and is able to carry out, pre-use checks to the machine and complies with requirements for its inspection, storage and transport.

5. Recognises and uses approved techniques for safe and efficient tree stump removal using a stump grinder.

6. Is able to establish safe work positions on a variety of sites including the use of ground anchors where appropriate.

7. Is able to identify hazards and implement control measures.

SYLLABUS
1. Issue of AFAG Guides 606 and 802. Status of AFAG Guides. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing as per AFAG guidance. Legislation relating to machinery at work.

2. PPE appropriate to Stump grinding machinery. Procedures for pre-use checks. Requirements for inspection, storage and transport of Stump grinding machinery.

3. Identification and control of potential hazards including weather conditions, condition of stump, overhead and underground power lines and cables, ground features, public access and roadside working.

4. Selection of safe working areas in particular machine positioning in relation to the material to be ground, local terrain, pedestrian and vehicular access.

5. Situations requiring the deployment of a banksman.

6. Techniques for safe and efficient manual preparation of the stumps to be ground.

7. Safe and efficient disposal of arisings.

8. Daily, weekly and monthly maintenance programmes.
