A course for persons inexperienced in the use of woodchipping machinery.

Successful completion of this course will prepare trainees for assessment in NPTC Unit ABWC02.

The course is physical in nature. Trainees must have a good level of general fitness and stamina. Medical conditions must be reported to the course organiser prior to commencement. Some medical conditions may disqualify prospective trainees.


OBJECTIVES

The expected learning outcomes are that the trainee: -

1. Understands the legislation and safety guidelines pertaining to the safe use of woodchipping machinery.

2. Identifies and understands the differences between tractor mounted/PTO driven woodchippers and those with integral petrol/diesel engines.

3. Understands and can select the appropriate PPE relating to woodchipper operation.

4. Understands the need for, and is able to carry out:

  • pre-use checks
  • daily maintenance
  • post-use checks prior to transport or storage

5. Recognises and uses approved techniques for safe and efficient chipping of woody brash and timber.

6. Understands the procedures for removing a blockage in the infeed hopper, discharge chute or chipping drum.

7. Understands the requirements to establish and maintain safe work positions on a variety of sites.

8. Is able to identify hazards and implement control measures.

SYLLABUS
1. Issue of AFAG Guides 604 and 802. Status of AFAG Guides. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing as per AFAG 604. Legislation relating to machinery at work

2. PPE appropriate to Woodchipping machinery. Pre-use checks. Requirements for inspection, storage and transport of Woodchipping machinery.

3. Identification and control of potential hazards including weather conditions, timber condition, foreign matter content (i.e. metal, rope), overhead power lines and cables, ground features, public access and roadside working.

4. Selection of safe working areas in particular machine positioning in relation to the material to be chipped, local terrain, pedestrian and vehicular access.

5. Situations requiring the deployment of a banksman.

6. Techniques for safe and efficient handling of material to be chipped.

7. Techniques for safe and efficient chipper operation.

8. Safe and efficient disposal of arisings.

9. Daily, weekly and monthly maintenance programmes.
