| Who is the
course for?
The First Aid at Work course is designed for employers from any work environment
who need to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulation
1981. The employer should appoint a suitable candidate who is physically fit,
responsible and available to provide first aid in the work setting (as per Regulation
3, Section 47 of the Approved Code of Practice) (Available from HSE Books, telephone

What will be covered?
The training programme will cover the following broad topic areas:
- Communication and giving responsibility in an emergency, including
priorities and management
- Resuscitation: breathing, airway and heart massage
- Managing an unconscious casualty
- Treating and controlling bleeding
Treating:
- burns and scalds, injuries to bones, muscles and joints
- minor injuries
- shock
- eye injuries and rinsing out eyes
Coping with:
- Poisons, gases and fumes
- Moving injured people
- Recognising illness
- Simple record keeping, using the materials in the First Aid
box, buying first-aid supplies and being familiar with the duties
of employers
- Personal hygiene, cross infection when treating wounds
Additional information
Students must attend at least 24 contact hours before final assessment. (HSE
requirement)
How will I be assessed?
This will be based on a multi-choice question paper followed by a short practical
skills assessment. On successful completion of the course, the candidate will
receive the Statutory First Aid at Work Certificate (valid for 3 years).
Any candidates not meeting the competence units during final assessment,
will need an additional First Aid session and re-testing.
What facilities will be provided?
Candidates are advised to wear comfortable, casual clothing suitable for practical
training elements. You will have full access to our facilities.
